Gabriella Cilmi nasce il 10 ottobre 1991 a Dandenong, un sobborgo di Melbourne. Attualmente vive con I suoi genitori Paula e Joe (la sua famiglia affonda le proprie radici in Calabria esattamente di Pallagorio in provincia di Crotone, Italia) e suo fratello Joseph.
La carriera musicale della cantautrice comincia nel 2005, quando, a soli 14 anni, incide due tracce per la colonna sonora del film "Hating Alison Ashley", intitolate "Don't Tell Me" e "Sorry" e scritte da lei insieme a Barbara e Adrian Hannan. Successivamente, condividendo lo stesso manager del gruppo pop delle Sugababes, le supporta nelle loro apparizioni live, comprese quelle della componente nel gruppo Mutya Buena nel suo debutto da solista. Nel dicembre del 2007 incide una nuova traccia per la colonna sonora di un film, "St. Trinian's". Nei primi mesi del 2008 incide invece una cover del brano "Echo Beach" dei Martha and the Muffins. Sempre in questo periodo supporta nei loro tour australiani gruppi e cantanti come Rufus Wainwright e i Nouvelle Vague. Il 31 marzo dello stesso anno viene pubblicato il suo album di debutto, "Lessons to Be Learned", scritto e prodotto con la collaborazione della squadra di produzione Xenomania, che ha ottenuto un buon successo in varie parti del mondo raggiungendo la top10 delle classifiche australiane e britanniche, e la posizione numero 13 di quella irlandese. L'album è stato certificato disco d'oro in Australia ed è stato trainato dal singolo "Sweet About Me". Ecco il testo della canzone
